Vitamin B8 – An essential water soluble vitamin that supports healthy regulation of cell membranes and the nervous system, B8 is Integral to the production of neurotransmitters Serotonin and Dopamine which regulate mood, low levels of which have been associated with depression and anxiety.(1)
Form: Myo-inositol, a carbocyclic sugar that is abundant in the brain; it mediates cell signal transduction in response to a variety of hormones, neurotransmitters, and growth factors.
Vitamin B6 – An essential vitamin that supports the central nervous system and the metabolic process, helping to convert food into energy. B6 also aids in the creation of red blood cells and neurotransmitters. Since the body requires vitamin B6 to create Serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for regulating mood, low levels have been associated with depression (2)
Form: Pyridoxal 5’-phosphate is a coenzyme, and the most active form of vitamin B6
Vitamin B12 – An essential vitamin the body needs to maintain healthy nerves, blood cells, and brain function. Promotes cellular metabolism and circadian rhythm. B12 deficiency may affect mood, emotions and sleeping (3)
Form: Methylcobalamin is the active form of vitamin B12 and is required by the body to help regenerate methionine (essential amino acid for proper cell function).
Phenylethylamine (PEA) – The organic compound and trace amine found in chocolate that is thought to produce its positive effects on mood (4), PEA acts as a central nervous system stimulant in humans. PEA has been suggested as a ‘safe’ alternative to stimulant drugs, such as amphetamine or methylphenidate, which are accompanied by many undesirable side effects.(5)
Phenylalanine – An essential amino acid (provided by food) that plays a key role in the biosynthesis of other amino acids and is important in the structure and function of many proteins and enzymes.(6)
