Recharge

Recharge™ contains the building blocks your body needs to create serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for stabilizing our mood and promoting a sense of wellbeing and relaxation. As the precursor to melatonin, serotonin plays a role in managing our wake/sleep cycle and regulates appetite and digestion (1)

Ingredients

*General supplement information is listed in accordance with the National Institute of Health dietary supplement fact sheets, unless otherwise noted (a)

Vitamin B6 – An essential vitamin that supports the central nervous system and the metabolism process, helping to convert food into energy. B6 also aids in the creation of red blood cells and neurotransmitters. Since the body requires vitamin B6 to create Serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for regulating mood, low levels have been associated with depression (1)

Form: Pyridoxal 5’-phosphate is a coenzyme, and the most active form of vitamin B6

Tryptophan – A plant-derived amino acid that is needed for the in synthesis of proteins and bioactive metabolites, including serotonin, melatonin, and Vitamin B3/niacin. Recent studies have indicated that dietary tryptophan has the potential to contribute to the therapy of autism, cardiovascular disease, cognitive function, chronic kidney disease, depression (2), inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, sleep, social function, and microbial infections (3).

Form: L-Tryptophan is the natural form, found in foods. It has been shown to be more potent (4) than D-Tryptophan, which is produced during food processing and microbes. (5)

Iron – A mineral that the body needs for physical growth, neurological development, and cellular function. Iron also supports muscle metabolism and healthy connective tissue and is readily available as a dietary supplement. Brain iron status influences energy metabolism and neurotransmitter function, which influence emotional behavior (6). A deficiency can reduce memory/learning capacity and motor skills and cause emotional/psychological problems (7).

Form: Ferrous fumarate is the most bioavailable form of iron, and contains 33% of elemental iron (compared to ferrous sulfate, which has 20% or ferrous gluconate at 12%) (8)

Vitamin C – Also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble nutrient found in some foods. In the body, it acts as an antioxidant, helping to protect cells from the damage caused by free radicals.

Form: Nutra-C Non-Acidic Vitamin C is manufactured via a proprietary water-based process and contains naturally occurring Vitamin C metabolites, making it 100% bioavailable.(9)

Magnesium – An essential mineral required in metabolic function (protein synthesis), nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation. It contributes to the development of bone and is required for the synthesis of DNA. Certain forms may impact the nervous system, promoting relaxation and sleep.

Form: Magnesium Glycinate combines magnesium with amino acid glycine, which results in similar effects to GABA and may promote circadian rhythm and decrease inflammation (10) in addition to reducing anxiety and stress (11).

Potassium – An essential mineral your body needs for almost everything it does, including proper kidney and heart function, muscle contraction, and the transmission of messages through the nervous system.(12) Potassium deficiency can cause irritability, fatigue, muscle weakness, cramps, Restless Leg Syndrome, and chronic pain. Depression often accompanies these symptoms (13) , which may be partially due to the role potassium appears to play as a facilitator in ensuring the brain’s ability to properly utilize serotonin.

Form: Potassium Gluconate is believed to be the most palatable and non-acidifying form of potassium (compared to potassium chloride, citrate, phosphate, and bicarbonate).(14)

Vitamin B8 – An essential, although not strictly a vitamin because it is biosynthesized by the body, it supports healthy regulation of cell membranes and the nervous system. Integral to production of neurotransmitters Serotonin and Dopamine which regulate mood, low levels of which have been associated with depression and anxiety. (15)

Zinc – An essential mineral that plays an important role in immune function, protein synthesis, wound healing, and DNA synthesis. It is required for proper sense of taste and smell and supports normal growth and development during pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence. Zinc deficiency of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease and mood disorders including depression (16).

Form: Zinc Picolinate is one of the more easily absorbed forms available and is less likely to cause stomach irritation (17)

Vitamin E – A fat-soluble vitamin that acts as an antioxidant in the body, supporting immune system health, and protecting cells from the damage caused by free radicals and oxidative stress.(18) Vitamin E deficiency can cause nerve/muscle damage causing loss of feeling in the arms and legs, muscle weakness, and vision problems (19). Since higher levels of Vitamin E have been correlated with better cognitive performance, it is possible that it could potentially slow the onset of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s (20)

Form: Alpha-tocopherol is considered the most active natural form because it is the preferred form of vitamin E transported and used by the liver (21).

Vitamin B9 – Folate, also known as B9 is a water-soluble vitamin and coenzyme in the synthesis of DNA and RNA, and in the metabolism of amino acids. It supports healthy cell division and promotes proper fetal growth and development and has been proven to reduce the risk of birth defects.

Form: l-methylfolate, is a coenzyme capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier; it supports neurotransmitter synthesis of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine and has been used to treat depression (22) (23)
